Enlightenment – the Cabinets of Wonder
For Brighton Life Drawing Sessions (now Draw), I designed and painted a bespoke “Cabinet of Wonder”. As one of three, it was pulled around the city as part of an all night arts festival – White Night. Stopping at designated points, the Cabinets of Wonder opened theatrically to reveal a life model inside. The resulting crowd were encouraged to draw what they saw. I was also commissioned to create a map of the city showing the cabinet stopping points. The map was additionally used by BANG (Brighton Animator’s Group) for publicity for their large scale projection, ‘Dream Machine’. The general theme of the night was “Enlightenment” and both pieces were influenced by the 18th century age of Enlightenment.
This project was supported and funded by The Big Draw and Brighton and Hove county council. Enlightenment: The Cabinets of Wonder won a Drawing Inspiration award from the Big Draw.
